Loosing teeth is part of life, old age, road and sports accidents, gum disease may lead to teeth loss but advances in dentistry have enabled complete restoration of one or several teeth that look exactly like your surrounding natural teeth.

Dental implants are extremely strong, long lasting and look and feel completely natural and enable you to eat, speak and smile with confidence. At North Hill Dental we have carried out several hundred dental implants with great success. Our patients enjoy this as a permanent solution to missing teeth.

A Dental implant is where a root is made up of a small titanium screw that is placed directly into the jawbone and allowed to heal. The implant has to be allowed time to heal which can take 6 weeks to 3 months depending on individual case, this is because the bone has to bound with the implant a process called Osseointegration.

YOUR IMPLANT JOURNEY

CONSULTATION

You can book your consultation online via our website or alternatively contact our reception team who will be happy to help. During the initial visit, your dentist will help you decide the best treatment options specifically for your teeth, we will also answer any questions you may have before you start your journey.

MAKING YOUR DECISION

After your consultation and you have decided to go ahead with treatment a detailed letter will be sent out to you with your options, fees and treatment time.

Our reception team will then arrange your appointments.

START OF YOUR TREATMENT

At this visit, you will be given a local anaesthetic, we will remove any teeth and place the implants during the same procedure. Your treatment will take place in one of our surgeries in sterile conditions. During this stage you may or may not have a temporary tooth fitted.

UNCOVERING THE IMPLANT

After approximately 2-3 months you will return to the practice once the bone has healed. At this stage using local anaesthetic we will uncover the implant, which is a simple surgical procedure. A metallic dome called a healing cap will then be fitted. After a couple of weeks and once the gum has healed around the healing cap we will arrange an appointment to take impressions after a couple of weeks you will be fitted with your new teeth!

REVIEW AND AFTERCARE

Two weeks after fitting you with your new implants, we will review how you are getting on and continue to see you for regular visits.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO IMPLANTS

One Front Tooth Missing

A missing front tooth can be replaced with a denture or bridge, however these require teeth either side of the space to be drilled down. An advantage of a dental implant is that this does not need to happen. A dental implant will also stimulate and maintain the bone around the tooth to give a natural appearance.

Where a front tooth is missing it is important that the aesthetical appearance has a pleasing result and to achieve this we will make a provisional tooth to make sure you are happy with the fit, appearance and that it feels comfortable when you bite. When the implant is placed we may need to increase the amount of bone or gum using bone regression, bone grafting or soft tissue grafting. These will always be discussed with you at your consultation.

A Few Back Teeth Missing

When you have missing back teeth, these may not be visible however, with less back teeth it can affect the functionality of how you chew and bite. With missing back teeth it can put extra pressure on your front teeth. The extra pressure can then have an effect on the front teeth.

More than one implant may be required to improve functionality, this will be discussed at your consultation. If an implant is required on the top jaw more bone may be needed, this is known as a sinus lift.

All Top or Bottom Teeth Missing

If you have missing teeth on your upper or lower jaw then an option would be to replace with a full denture. Dentures can limit your social and lifestyle activities and can also affect the type of foods that you are able to chew comfortably. With a minimum of 2 implants on the lower jaw, or 4 implants on the upper jaw we can restore the functionality of your bite and making the denture more stable, the implants will anchor the denture to your gums without irritation.

Another option would be to give you functioning fixed teeth. This can be achieved by using 4 to 8 implants to hold a bridge that is either cemented or screwed into position. These options will improve your confidence, the functionality of your teeth and also your general health

REPLACING ONE TOOTH

The condition of the bone is assessed with and an X-ray or 3D Bone Scan. An impression is made of the jaw and existing teeth, forming an important platform for treatment planning.

The dental implant is placed in the jawbone. No healthy teeth are affected or damaged. Unlike other replacement solutions such as a bridge or denture, the adjacent healthy teeth may need to be shaved/ ground down.

The abutment is attached to the dental implant.

A crown is then placed on the abutment, fitting perfectly at the edge of the gum.

The new tooth is now complete and you can use this tooth as a normal tooth. It is virtually impossible to see the difference between the existing teeth and the new tooth.

REPLACING SEVERAL TEETH

If you have lost several teeth there are two solutions: you can have a number of crowns or a bridge supported by dental implants.

Some people loose teeth in the back of the mouth. This can be caused by gum problems (periodontitis) or broken down teeth or by teeth cracking due to previous fillings.

Between two and four dental implants are installed for a dental implant bridge. This solution does not affect your own teeth. The bridge will function for many years, regardless of the condition of your existing teeth.

Abutments are attached to each dental implant. The next step is to fit the bridge; the new set of teeth is placed on the abutments and look like natural teeth.

The dental implant bridge is now in place and can withstand the strong chewing forces that occur in the back of the mouth. It feels and functions like your natural teeth.

ALL ON 4
